Harnessing AI to Advance Roadway Safety and Efficiency

Artificial intelligence is becoming a game-changer in transportation, and a recent webinar hosted by TransCore and the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) showcased how agencies are leveraging this technology to make roads safer and operations more efficient.
Speakers Marge Rangel (TransCore) and Richard Jaramillo (MDOT) walked through several real-world use cases, from AI-enabled hazard detection systems that alert operators to stopped vehicles and roadway debris, to adaptive traffic signal optimization that improves traffic flow in real time. They also explored how predictive analytics can anticipate maintenance needs, helping agencies proactively address infrastructure issues before they become costly disruptions.
The webinar spotlighted successful pilot projects in Maryland, where AI systems have contributed to faster incident response, lower crash rates, and smoother traffic conditions. By integrating data from multiple sources—such as cameras, sensors, and historical trends—these tools support a more coordinated and informed approach to roadway management.
Looking ahead, the discussion emphasized the importance of data privacy, vendor interoperability, and ongoing investment in innovation. Maryland’s experience offers a compelling model for other transportation agencies seeking to harness AI to meet evolving safety, mobility, and operational goals.
